National ICT plan for local government targets 20% cost savings

Kable - Government Computing - Category management strategy 'critical' to drive efficiencies, boost innovation and disrupt 'tired and medieval software market'

A national model for IT procurement in local government with a strong focus on strategic category management has been launched today.

The National ICT Commercial Category Strategy for Local Government, which has the backing of organisations such as the Local Government Association and the Crown Commercial Service (CCS), has evolved from a successful approach to IT procurement adopted by London boroughs, the London ICT Project, which commenced in 2012 as a collaboration between the 33 local authorities in London and the CCS's predecessor, the Government Procurement Service (GPS).

The category strategy sets out to address issues highlighted by Heads of ICT and Heads of Procurement in local government and by House of Commons and Office of Fair Trading (OFT) reports to ensure that local government can fully use ICT to drive the transformation agenda required to help to deliver the savings and efficiencies needed and to better meet the needs of service users.
